This course will explore a non traditional building material pallet and fabrication process in the design modification, digital survey and fabrication of a temporary spatial architectural production. Nurbs Modeling, Digital Surveying and both CNC and hand fabrication techniques will be deployed to quickly evolve the project. The courses primary teaching objective is to foster Tacit Knowledge development in the design process, particularly as this knowledge relates to the intersection between material qualities and digital data. The output from the course will be a single collaborative group project.

BIOGRAPHY
Prior to coming to WBA as an artist, academic, design practitioner and entrepreneur, Jonas’s work engaged
issues of economy, resource, environment and design. His work focused on developing products, furniture,
architecture and novel material composites. Along with running his company Hauptman Products Inc. (HPI), a design and manufacturing company founded in 2002, which focuses on applying material and ecological design research towards the built environment. He has also worked at 3form Inc. in Salt Lake City and as a freelance designer in the contract furniture industry. By merging tacit knowledge’s toward geometric innovation, material appropriation and invention he has been producing products/ projects that emerge out of the fields of Craft but reach into the fields and markets of architecture, computation, composite engineering, urban forestry, and environmental activism. Hauptman’s projects and products have been exhibited, published and sold internationally. His academic training is in the Fine Arts includes an MFA

in Metalsmithing from Cranbrook Academy of Art (2000), and a BFA in Sculpture from Rhode Island School of Design (1994). Since 2000, He has lectured and taught course work at a variety of national art and design institutions most often in the field of architecture at such institutions as; Southern California Institute of Architecture and Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning at the University of Michigan where he was recipient of the Oberdick fellowship in 2004. In addition to teaching and research both as Academic and CEO of HPI and since his work has been included in dozens of publications and exhibits internationally including:

The seminar will investigate aspects of the early work and theory of Charles-Edouard Jeanneret, an apprentice of watchcase engraving whose poor eyesight forced him to transition to a new profession. We will focus on his design of houses in La Chaux de Fonds and his invention of the Corbusian diagram in Towards a New Architecture. We will compare the diagram’s origins with its subsequent interpretations.

2. Arch 5450-2 Topics in Architectural History: Crusader Architecture and Cultural Identity in the
Eastern Mediterranean (expected to meet history requirement) (3cr)
Nikos Bakritis, Cass Gilbert Visiting Assistant Professor
Tu/Th 11:15-2:00pm

This seminar-based module will study the architectural heritage of four great islands of the Eastern Mediterranean in the Late Medieval period. We will examine a wide range of architectural monuments from Cyprus, Crete, Rhodes and Chios with a particular focus on issues of historiography, structural archaeology and preservation. The seminar’s topic draws from the research scope of an ongoing European Union/Cyprus Institute project titled “Tracing Identity in the Eastern Mediterranean.” The project is also supported by the Center for World Heritage Studies and this seminar aims to engage students in the research work of the Center. Selected students will be invited to participate in summer fieldwork research in Cyprus, Chios and the Aegean.

This module course will not be a general survey of the architectural history of the Eastern Mediterranean, but a thorough assessment of selected buildings studied in their historical context and viewed as a reflection of the society that created and used them. Students will work on team and individual research projects and presentations, which will address a variety of topics and problems related to the rich architectural traditions of the region.

The intent of the course is to put forward a debate on the dominant theories and paradigms informing city design from the renaissance to the 20th century. The course, however, is not structured chronologically but as a trilogy of critical issues. The first part of the trilogy centers on exploring current critiques on the nature of contemporary cities in the West, follow by an inquiry into the social and human purpose that Cities fulfill. The second section reviews the historical legacy from which to evaluate the evolution of city design since the renaissance with emphasis on 19th and early 20th century manifestos. The third section of the course analyze the leading theoretical urban propositions of the mid 20th century, a period imprinted by the loss of confidence in both, the Modern City as well as in the Garden City, while providing little agreement as to what should be its alternatives. The section concludes with exploring the late 20th and early 21st centuries urban design propositions including the concepts of urban livability, quality-of-life, and walkable cities within the new paradigms of bioclimatic design and sustainable regional urban development as conveyed by the indicators of global warming, the shift to renewable energy and material sources, the ecological footprint, and the urban heat island effect’s measurements, among others.

Asking the question “What is so extraordinary about urbanism and housing in the Netherlands and to what extent can we apply Dutch ideas in the United states?” the seminar involves readings, lectures, discussions and presentations of analytic projects. We will focus on 3 cities and study projects to identify (1) how Dutch cities and housing evolved, (2) what is especially Dutch, (3) how Dutch culture affects planning, design and implementation, and (4) how the Dutch designs are similar to or differ from local examples. Each students will select one or two issues to focus on during the semester, such as: orientation to pedestrian, bicycle and public transportation, concern for hydrology and land use, ecological assumptions, typological approach, creating visible urban form, orientation to user and participation, individuality in service to community, housing and income as a right, attention to material and detail, and/or orientation to long term investment.

1. Arch 4750/5750-1 Topics in Urbanism: Territorial City (3cr)
William Conway, Associate Professor
Thursday 9:45-12:30 (time to be confirmed)

Traditional distinctions between the historical city, and suburb, are being erased and replaced with notions of the expanding city, metacity, global city megalopolis and territorial city. In this ever-expanding domain of topography, event, and media, forces of economy, scale and occupation often determine relationships between the dominance of the territorial and moments of control and lawlessness. Despite the relentless growth of the expanding city, the need to construct urban enclaves still exists. New models of occupation are being developed offering as yet untested patterns–patch, spline, and mosaic–that operate within this dominant and expanding field.

This seminar offers an opportunity to identify conditions within which the territorial city and urbanity coexist in the Twin Cities metropolitan area. Our investigations will seek to uncover relationships between elements that shape this condition and to forge new tools to re-present these nascent urban ideas. The seminar will consist of lectures, discussions, field trips and individual and collaborative work. Students will use mapping, drawing, digital and analog modeling, and other recording and representational techniques.

4. Arch 4150/5410-1 Topics in Architectural History: Meaning and Use of Public Space (3cr)
(meets history requirement)
Rachel Iannacone, Visiting Assistant Professor
W 6:15-9:00pm

Through studying a variety of public spaces from the early modern and modern era, this course seeks to examine the ways people use, misuse, and subvert public space. The course is divided into three sections. First, we will immerse ourselves in scholarship and theory about public space, acquainting ourselves with the writings of authors from a variety of backgrounds including Geography, Architecture, Anthropology, Archeology, Urban Planning, Public Policy and Art History. Second, we will examine several case studies including the Plaza de Mayo (Buenos Aires), Syntagma Square (Athens), Freedom Plaza (Washington DC), Central Park (NY), the Lower East Side (NY), and the FDR Memorial (Washington DC). Finally, teams of students will present their own research.

Assignments:
Students will complete several assignments over the course of the semester designed to enhance their understanding of both local and historical public spaces, develop their critical thinking skills, and hone their writing and presentation skills. Working in teams, students will conduct research on specific historical examples, which they will present to the class. Each student will submit a proposal, draft, and final research paper.
